“An honest man will never have any other.”

Before Coffee: Keep on Truckin’

Thought I’d share the sketchcard samples I did for Marvel and Lucasfilm a couple weeks ago– haven’t heard back from them. Doing the sketchcards are really fun though, I might be doing a bunch of Flobots ones soon, we’ll see. These were all done with Prismacolor markers… Here’s a look…

There’s been no “break” for me. Especially with not a steady paycheck coming in, I find myself back in freelance land doing some small jobs here and there. The little $2 dollar drawings I’ve done have actually brought in a few job offers for higher paying gigs, from company logos to blog headers… so I’m trucking along I guess.

I’m looking to kick the Flobots comic into a higher gear here. I did some writing and plotting and figuring out where it’s going on the sci-fi angle. I’m also thinking more along the lines of graphic novels for the future of my own projects, but I don’t want to jump in and commit to some giant project of my own right now.

I noticed I’ve been locked out of the Drunk Duck account to update Hero By Night or do anything over there (check pageviews). Not even a peep or heads up to me by anyone. They edited the header in a rush getting rid of the email the creator link and the Hero Gram Newsletter link. They also deleted the last entry saying Hero By Night is on extended hiatus, and all of the fan comments wishing it would come back. Another person on Twitter told me he voiced some critique on Drunk Duck in the forums , and his comments were deleted. So it appears, even if they don’t want it to, that Platinum Studios has adopted a sort of corporate fascist police state where while they have deals and contests going on, they can’t allow for ANY discourse in the conversation , or any critique of their services. They want new people and new contestants and their families, new investors to be able to come on and see that “EVERYTHING IS OKAY!” — Again… not very good business ethics at all going on there. I can’t say that it makes me very happy to report that, but I also can’t say that I really give a damn either.

Onward!

I’ve also done a lot less internet communication lately due to keeping myself busy. If I were to stop and “take a break”, i fear I might actually lose my mind or just drop over dead. Sort of like Samson and his hair or something, you know?

Those are really cool cards DJ. You have a very talented mind and a great business sense. I have no doubt we will see more great things with your name on them.

I love the Indy one the best, I think.

It’s very unfortunate that Platinum screwed you over. But regardless of that, everyone knows the man behind the comic. They’ve always erased comments against them, but they won’t be able to hide behind their bad practices forever. They will regret not being nicer to you when you start the next big thing. :)

The cards came out really well. Please do a wookie.

That’s really frustrating news about Platinum.

Yeah, I saw what happened over at dd. That’s pretty much a shitty move they made.
Heck, I have to say the site over there is really starting to look like Myspace’s uglier inbred step-sister, and the admins are starting to act like bootlickers, since Volte departed for shores anew.
From what I hear, Platinum don’t want to invest in dd, but are there very quickly to pocket any of the ad-revenue the site makes. A very sucky attitude, and they still think they can get in on Marvel and DC’s Hollywood moive making bandwagon. What a laugh, and that’s after most West Coast Comic Book stores no longer touch Platinum stuff (well four of my local stores, alone, have long since given up on anything bearing Platinum’s logo.)

Oh well, I’m yanking my strip off there, as I feel their flashing, bouncing all singing flash-based adbanners just get annoying and makes my hard work look like crap. And it’s time it had a home of it’s own, instead of swimming with all the 8-bit kiddie sprite, copyright infringing tripe.

I wish people would not talk about my fellow admins that way. I haven’t been as active there as I used to but we all try our best to make the most of the situation. This isn’t the first time I hear about my friends being unfairly slammed in public for being stuck in the middle of a situation we generally do not have control over.

I’m sorry to hear that has happened to you DJ. I don’t know why that happened and I do check on your comic occasionally so I was curious as to what was going on. I’m really deeply sorry to hear that things are turning out this way. Good luck and all that!

I hate the fact that your HBN story won’t be able to continue. I really loved the story. It was something new, but still had a classic feel to it. I think that that is something that is hard to make happen. I’m sure you’ve got plenty of ideas cooking on the back burn of your mind. I’d love to see another take on the superhero genre from you at a place like Image that you get to control the series yourself. Best of luck to you.
